Match Ratings - Rangers 0-0 Spartak Moscow

Match Ratings from last nights frustrating 0-0 draw with Spartak Moscow.

Our dominance in the first half should have seen us at least 1-0 up at the break. Despite that we were quite poor in possession, lots of slack passes and balls into the box. Spartak had a 10-15 minute spell after halftime but other than that I thought we were fairly comfortable

ALLAN MCGREGOR - 7

Quiet night again for McGregor. Didn’t have much to do at all, barring a strong block early in the second half. Will be chuffed to get his first clean sheet in 7 games.

JAMES TAVERNIER - 5

Uneven performance from the skipper. Caught under the ball once in the second half but showed up well defensively other than that. Uncharacteristically poor going forward and delivery was as bad as I’ve seen from him. Clearly Spartak focused on Tav particularly with Hanni coming on in the second half and tried to cut off the supply from him.

JOE WORRALL - 8

Impressed me again. Reads the game very well for someone so young. A classic English stopper who steps out well and is decent on the deck and in the air. First choice partner for Goldson now.

CONNOR GOLDSON - 7

Seen some minor criticism on social media but I thought he did well again. Solid and composed, gets across the ground well and leads from the back.

JON FLANAGAN - 7

Another solid performance from Flanagan. No frills and starting to offer more offensively. Played well recently. Playing Flanagan lets us be more attacking centrally as he can tuck in as a third centre back out of possession which is a nice option to have.

RYAN JACK - 6

Controversial maybe but I’m not sure Jack is really required in games like these when we’re looking to be  play at a high tempo and attack aggressively. He was neat and tidy but we needed a bit more dynamism imo.

LASSANA COULIBALY - 6

Put himself about well but just doesn’t seem to be clicking at the moment. Should have flung himself at that ball from Morelos in the second half. Quite unlucky on a couple of occasions with passes and bobbles of the ball.

OVIE EJARIA - 8

Excellent in the first half and parts of the second. Very good at getting his body in the way awkwardly to win back possession and uses it well. Would like to see him affecting play about 10-15 yards higher up the park.

DANIEL CANDEIAS - 5

Evil twin day again last night. Nothing really came off and you could sense his frustration. Great chance in the first half on his left which he elected to flash across the goal. On the right hand side he’d have buried that.

RYAN KENT - 8 MOTM

Once again our best player offensively. Quiet opening period but came alive as the game progressed. Felt the tactical tweaks we made in the second half released him and he was very good. Loved his little trick to beat two Spartak defenders on the edge of the box. Will be vital on Sunday.

ALFREDO MORELOS - 7

Frustrating night for Fredo up against probably the best centre half he’s faced this season. He put himself about well though, and made an excellent chance that Coulibaly should have buried in the second half.

EROS GREZDA - 3

Looked off the pace, which is still understandable. Needs a run of games to judge. Thought the penalty would have been soft and the chance he had was very difficult for someone with limited match sharpness.

GLENN MIDDLETON - 2

On slightly later than expected and was a bit one dimensional, running the ball out of play a couple of times due to his keenness to get forward.

STEVEN GERRARD - 7

No complaints really. Happy with the team selection and the tactical tweak in the second half worked quite well for us in terms of regaining a foothold in the game. Poor decision making and final balls cost us the win, but can’t be too unhappy with 11 unbeaten in Europe
