Euro 2020 Diary Day 10 – Italia Grande

Happy Father’s Day to all my fellow Rangers’ Das out there! Only the two games today but two really good ones as group A became the first to reach its conclusion.

As we are getting to the business end of the tournament it is a bit sad to see the number of games start to reduce, but I got to write this nice and early, so swings and roundabouts. (Then I forgot to hit publish and that’s why this came out at 1am this morning instead of last night, idiot.)

Our first day of the final group games and the matches kicking off at the same time, a lovely last day of the season feel about proceedings. Switzerland vs Turkey, the Swiss were going, looking for goals and put in a really good performance. Turkey had to win and hope for the best, it became clear early on that wasn’t going to happen when Switzerland took the lead after six minutes.

Turkey have been far and away the competition’s most disappointing team. The hipster’s choice have been utterly hopeless. This was probably their best performance but that’s not much use when you still get hammered 3-1. Switzerland are a right in the middle kind of team for me, a last 16 team through and through. They were fun to watch tonight but I found them quite uninteresting in their first two games and fully expect them to be on their way out in the next round. This was a thoroughly good game though and the scoreline could have been higher.

It was the right result for Wales who just had to avoid a tanking against Italy to secure second place in Group A and once again get through to the last 16. A different performance from Wales today than the win over Turkey, more back to the walls but you have to give them credit, they know how to get a result.

What about Italy though? A barrel load of changes and they still put in a tremendous performance. Wales did well to keep it to 1-0, especially when it went to 10 men, but I don’t really think they could have had too many complaints if Italy did end up winning by four or five. They might still not be considered the favourites by some, but I think you are a brave man or woman to bet against them.
