Euro Diary Day 2

folder_openH&H Articles

Today was much harder than anyone could have ever imagined. For all of us who were so excited to watch football all day and get right into this tournament. This blog is supposed to be a light hearted and hopefully funny recounting of the day’s events but I don’t feel comical today, just relieved.

I was looking forward to coming on here and telling you what a Willy Robbie Savage is, eviscerate Jonathon Pearce for his mispronunciation of Glenn Kamara and tell you how Russia should revert back to the USSR for sporting competitions.

But I can’t get away from it, what happened to Christian Eriksen is all that matters today. That he looks like he has pulled through to the other side of this is all that matters. Whatever else happens in this tournament, nothing will beat the news that Eriksen was stable, breathing and talking in hospital.

The defining image of this tournament will be the one of Eriksen’s team mates, arms linked, huddled around him. The video of this tournament will be that of the Denmark and Finland fans singing Eriksen’s name in unison. Footballers and football fans get a bad rep but that was two humbling, beautiful displays of humanity that the wider football community needed.

Kiss your loved ones and be thankful for tomorrow, I’ll speak to you then.
