Match Ratings – Rangers 0-1 Celtic

I really, really do not want to go over this game again. It does not matter if we played well, or indeed were the better team on the day, we did not lift the trophy, that is all that matters. We can credit the team for turning up and performing to the minimum standard we would expect in a game like this, but our lack of a finishing touch and a stellar performance from their goalkeeper ultimately screwed us, on top of some rather terrible refereeing decisions. Forgive the shorter breakdowns for each player, I just want to move on to the next game as soon as possible.

Allan McGregor – 6
Had very little to do but could not keep out the offside goal that they scored.

James Tavernier – 6
Got forward well and put in dangerous crosses but that weaned following the concession.

Connor Goldson – 6
If only he could have converted one of the headers he had at goal from a corner, he seems to do everything right when attacking a set piece but just cannot get enough purchase on it.

Filip Helander – 6
Not a dreadful game but not dominant enough, hasn’t been consistent since the last international break, maybe a spell out whilst recovering from injury is best for all parties.

Borna Barisic – 6
Forward runs were also good but found their right back hard to deal with and couldn’t take advantage of the red card.

Scott Arfield – 6
Not terrible, usual amount of effort we would expect, but faded drastically as the game went on.

Ryan Jack – 7
Has the heart of a lion and was leading his teammates and the crowd. Put in some important challenges and nearly scored a brilliant long range goal. Future captain of this club there is no doubt.

Glen Kamara – 5
Never closed down Frimpong anywhere near enough and looked over awed by the occasion at points.

Joe Aribo – 6
Was playing decent football in the first half and feeding Tavernier well down the right, but his lack of pace in games like these does get found out.

Alfredo Morelos – 7
Was creating a lot of opportunities and cannot be criticised for taking on a lot of shots, it’s just that his finishing let him down. I still think it was a poor penalty from him, in spite of the keeper making a good save from it.

Ryan Kent – 6
Didn’t get on the ball enough to have the kind of impact we hoped to see from the winger.

Jermain Defoe – 6
Had one decent chance which hit the side netting but it never works when both he and Morelos are on the same field.

Brandon Barker – 5
He comes on to provide extra pace but he didn’t do that, painfully obvious he is a long way off this level of game.

Nikola Katic – 6
On late for the injured Helander but he didn’t get the set piece chance we hoped he might get late on.
